Fazendo Uma Geral – Site News

I’ve been tidying things up (fazendo uma geral) around here since I came back to WordPress as well as posting like a madman for the past 30 days. Some things you may have noticed are:

- New Blog Theme
- Brazilian Films List below About section
- Cleaner Category Menu (ie, you can click on a city under Geography)
- A Record 89 Posts in One Month (normally about 3 months worth).

- I also brought Eyes On Portugal over to WordPress (but I’m currently taking a break from it)
- As for the Vanity URL of EyesOnBrazil.com, that should work for this blog again in a few weeks.

Two Roads Diverged In a (Green &) Yellow Wood

Not many people know that the Robert Frost poem entitled ‘The Road Not Taken’ has two interpretations. One is more literal and common, which says the poem is non-conformist while the other, widely held by critics, speaks to regret at having taken the wrong road. While not being a pessimist, I tend to agree with the critics and as I close in on completing 100 posts and 5 months over at Eyes On Brazil on the Blogger platform, I’ve been monitoring monthly views and reader participation against what it was here on WordPress. The result is striking.

The difference in monthly views over 5 months was higher on WordPress by a factor of 15…so that being said, it’s about time I return, even if that means the vanity URL eyesonbrazil.com will still go to Blogger for a bit longer. You will find that I have transfered just the newer posts and comments to WordPress already.

I apologize for the turbulence. Let’s get things back on track.

Giving Up Without A White Flag

Every month or two I clean up my main links page, which consists of taking a few minutes to check all the links to make sure they are still active and relevant. There’s always a few bloggers and website starters who email me asking to be listed on my links page because they have their own online space where they talk about their love of Brazil.

Unfortunately, most of those who do email me asking for such a thing are precisely those that, after about 2 or 3 months, give up without waving the proverbial white flag to their readers. This, I don’t understand. If you are a Brazil lover who takes the time out (and in some cases, seemingly a lot of time) to give yourself an online presence, then why give up so easily? In light of such occurrences, I kindly request that you bestow upon your audience a single act of good will, either commit or get off the pot.

Eyes On Brazil Accepting Guest Posts!

After about two and a half years of doing my own posts at an average of 30+ per month, I’m going to reach out and see if there are any Brazil-savy folks who wish to contribute with a guest post on Eyes On Brazil. Of course, you’ll need a Brazil-related subject and a view, plus a way to get it to me (email is always good). I can be reached at eyes on brazil [at sign] gmail and if you wish, write it in Portuguese if that is your mother tongue and I’ll post it just the same!

Cheers!

Here’s to 800 posts!

After 2 years and 3 months, I’ve reached my 800th post. That means on average I’ve posted here 29.6 times every month. I’ve added blogs, divided them by cities then did away with them, experimented with a Portuguese-language version, a news/editorial-only version and I even made a blog about another country by following the same format as this one. More recently, I created a Portuguese-language learning blog, quit this blog for a month and I came back and switched blogging platforms.

There’s been a lot of hits and misses but the main idea has always been the same, which is to bring my knowledge to you, to learn along with you and to translate articles and ideas that can only be found in Portuguese. While I can’t exactly say “cheers to the next 800!”, I will keep at it for as long as I can and as long as I find myself inspired to write (as opposed to just learning).

Thanks for reading thus far

Anglicism Glossary – New Link

We all know that I dislike anglicisms but nonetheless, for those times when you hear a word that is vaguely familiar but a bit strangely pronounced (ie. market-ching for marketing), it’s likely that it’s an anglisicm. Then again, correct pronunciation is, of course, debatable.

Here’s the link to a site containing glossaries of ‘economic, finance and e-commerce’ terms as well as those on marketing. The good part of these glossaries is that each term is explained in Portuguese, making them a good reference for those that have to deal with and use anglicisms on a daily basis.

Brazil With a Z – New Link

Today I came across Brasil Com Z (in PT), which is a site for Brazilians who are living and working abroad for a semester or season or longer. In its most basic form, it is what I’ve always wanted to do but instead of Brazilians, they’d be Brazilianists and we could all post our articles to one site/blog.

So far, they’ve got Ana in Provence, Anita in Amsterdam, Barbara in Costa Rica, Flor in Londres, Gabriel in Tókio, Gabriel in Israel, Gil in Roma, Jeanine in Wellington, Karine in Dublin, Karol in Knoxville, Lucy in Murcia, Mirelle in Lyon, Nadja in Buenos Aires, Oscar in Delaware and Glenda in Sevilla…and each of them has their own blog.

Taking down my videos – Site News

I wanted to apologize if you find posts where my videos teaching Portuguese should be because I’ve deleted them from Youtube. I realize they helped people learn Portuguese and I pretty much only received positive responses from them but I don’t know…since I reached a certain level, I started to feel like it was about vanity to post videos of myself, talking about my knowledge. Perhaps it has to do with my current mood, which is to erase most of my online presence (minus these blogs). In the meantime, I’ll look for an audio solution and if found, I’ll redo the lessons. Don’t fret though because I transcribed the video lessons and included them in the posts.

Cheers

The Leveling Off Point – Part Two

After writing the original Leveling Off Point last month, I’ve come to the decision that Eyes On Brazil has had a good run in the 2 years I’ve been doing it. There are roughly 800 posts to browse through and the new platform here, which will act like a mirror site (with an Amazon store for Brazilian literature, music, etc).

A few weeks into the blogging platform change and I realized most people accessing my site are doing so via WordPress URLs, meaning my hits to this site aren’t diminishing. In any event, while it’s had a good run, there may be some walking left to do every once in a while so don’t be surprised if you see a new post when there’s a blue moon out. As for my interaction with the site, I will still check in on the stats and respond to every comment (just as I’ve always done) so no worries there.

What is next for me? I will continue to work on Eyes On Colombia since I feel like the country needs a spokesperson that can reach an English-speaking audience. Eyes On Portuguese, I will keep up with…and who knows, I might start with a new country (perhaps that is my fado, I mean fate).

Thank you all for reading, interacting and for coming back to learn more! Now let’s see how long this ‘quitting’ thing lasts…
