Whats the world coming to?…

If you are just waking up, you probably don’t want to read this. This is the caption I would have liked to have read above the story which I translated below. Some people are just sick. It’s way beyond my comprehension why this needed to happen to two people, most likely in love, enjoying a weekend in another city. The majority of the 130 comments left on the original story call for the death penalty to be allowed into the Brazilian Constitution.

CURITIBA – The weekend was marked by a barbarous crime in Paraná. A couple fell victim to a fake tour guide, who shot the boyfriend to death and then shot the girlfriend twice and raped her. Ozires del Corso, 22 years old, and his girlfriend, 23 years old, headed up a trail in the Morro do Boi, right next to a crowded beach, guided by a man who offered to show them the way. After 15 minutes of going up the hill, the couple was taken aside by the guide, who was armed.

Since they didn’t have any money, they were taken to a grotto. The man shot them both because they wouldn’t let him rape the girlfriend. Ozires died on the spot. The girlfriend was seriously hurt. The assassin escaped but returned at night in order to rape the woman.

Update: It seems the morro was not a favela but rather just a hill, next to a popular beach, which contains a grotto that many tourists to the area like to see. The police department  has a large group of officers, investigators, etc working on the case and they believe the t-shirt of the offender has been located. The female victim, whose name is Monique, is recovering from her injuries in Curitiba and is no longer at risk of dying. Ozires, who was a law student, came to the area with his family and his girlfriend during vacation. – Source (PT) with video

  1. Unfortunately, life is not cherished by those who commit crimes in Brazil. They never think they have something to loose. But in jail, rape crimes always get prisoners mad and the criminal gets it back.
I don’t think that death penalty would fix it. Social problems go beyond it, but would sure ease the number of people in prison.

  2. The death penalty won’t solve social maladies caused by poverty, inequality and drugs. In the United States, Texas executes more people than any other states AND has one of the highest murder rates.

Brazil has no social welfare state. Street children are abandoned by first their parents and then their government, left to fend for themselves in Dickensian conditions. Extrajudicial killings make for a sort of “de facto” death penalty without due process. Cops are underpaid and prisons are fetid hellholes.

Fortunately, that isn’t the whole of Brazil, or I wouldn’t love the country. But the divisions between rich and poor are very extreme in Brazil and have a lot to do with the violent crime which occurs there.

  3. I agree. The death penalty doesn’t solve much and leads to more of the same, an eye for an eye. Many other issues could be looked into in order to diminish the high rate of crimes in Brazil, although some may see the death penalty as a simple singular change in law while solving all the other problems would roughly take “the hand of God”, so to speak.

Why does rape occur? Issues of power come into play, household environment growing up also enters the picture, perhaps even the over-sexualization of women in society.

Why does murder occur? Drugs (a whole other issue). Poverty (yet another entire issue to be dealt with). The ease of obtaining a deadly weapon. Societal norms in such a society…etc.

Plus all the issues mentioned in Adrian’s comment.

  4. I am in complete and utter shock at the moment as I have just found out this crime has taken place. Ozires was such a wonderful young man. I got to know him in New Zealand as his host mother looking after him during his time here to learn English. He was such a spirited wonderful person. We had lots of great conversations about the world and what it is like. To end his life in this manner is just not fair. He had so much to contribute to the world and he would have done very well with his abilities to communcate to people at all levels. It is with deep sadness that I write now to tell you all what a special person he was. I cannot put into words what a great guy he was and how sad we are feeling. My sincere wishes go to his parents and family at their tragic loss. Please please know that he will always hold a special place in our hearts and we are as a family also shocked and in grief with you all. Why or Why do things continue to happen like this. The world is so full of horror and we need to stand up and get our voices heard around the world to stop this. His spirit will live on we love you Ozires or Oz as we call him. • Wow, Sue! Quite the compliment to the post I did…adds a lot to it, something very human which is important to know when reading of tragedies like this. I feel like I should do a second post on any updates with the story, if in fact there are. Thank you for your thoughts!

  7. very sad for your loss.just read the comment from steve and sue ellis,wanganui,n.z.shame they did not show the same concern with the diagnosis and subsequent death of their sister and sister in law from cancer in october 08 when they could not even attend the funeral nor show any support for the failings in her care which were proven to be appalling. just shows where prioities lie.
